As the digital universe continues to grow exponentially, IT administrators are struggling to keep pace. And they’re not always succeeding: according to data experts, in 2014 data loss and downtime cost organizations an estimated $1.7 trillion dollars.
From natural disasters to computer viruses to just old-fashioned human error, data loss can happen to even the most cautious organizations. So those organizations are turning to software-defined storage solutions not only to mitigate these risks, but also to unlock the potential of data and increase business agility.
IBM recently enhanced its IBM Spectrum Storage family of software-defined storage offerings. The newly re-architected solutions address the challenges created by the explosive growth of data by dramatically improving the speed, efficiency, and resiliency of storage systems. They were also designed to simplify the migration to new workloads by:
- Integrating storage management and data protection across traditional and new applications
- Delivering scalability with high performance for analytics, big data, social and mobile
- Unifying silos to deliver data without borders with built-in hybrid cloud support
- Optimizing data economics with intelligent data-tiering from flash to tape and cloud
With multiple Spectrum components coming together, IBM Spectrum Storage works to improve the way organizations manage, protect and store data, as well as easing deployment of new storage with these tools:
Spectrum Protect, formerly known as Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM), is designed to enable data backup and recovery for virtual, physical, cloud and software-defined environments.
Spectrum Control provides a data and storage management solution with comprehensive monitoring, automation and analytics. With on-premise and cloud-based variants, it address the two most significant storage costs: physical capacity and storage administration.
Spectrum Virtualize manages virtualized storage as a single storage pool, integrating islands of storage and easing management and optimization of the overall storage environment. It works with in-line, real-time compression, virtual disk mirroring, encryption, distributed RAID, FlashCopy snapshots, and remote data replication available to all storage in the pool regardless of native capability.
